While scheduled power cuts are entirely a thing of the past, if a random storm knocks out the grid, surviving is easy. Ensure you have a local Dialog or Mobitel 4G SIM card with a data package, as the cellular towers remain active. Bring a high capacity power bank to keep your phone charged. For the heat, simply walk to any large shopping mall like Colombo City Centre or a major hotel cafe, as they all run massive generators and maintain perfect air conditioning during any outage.
