The PickMe app is incredibly useful in Colombo. While it functions primarily as a ride hailing app, you can easily type Bastian Mawatha Bus Station or Makumbura Multimodal Center directly into the destination search bar.
The app will seamlessly navigate your tuk tuk or taxi driver exactly to the main entrance of the correct long distance bus terminal, completely removing the stress of explaining directions to a street driver.
Additionally, PickMe has recently integrated a feature allowing you to actually browse schedules and pre book seats on certain private luxury AC buses right from your phone.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
