Heading to Mirissa and Hiriketiya next week. Can I rely on my Visa/Mastercard for boutique hotels and restaurants, or do I need to carry large amounts of Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR)?

Hiriketiya is getting better with cards, but power outages sometimes take down the card terminals. ATMs are available in nearby Dikwella town if the local ones run dry.

Also note that some smaller establishments add a 3% surcharge for credit card payments to cover processing costs. Cash is highly appreciated!

Boutique hotels and high-end cafes in Mirissa accept cards, but local beach shacks, tuk-tuks, and surf instructors are strictly cash-only. Always keep around 10,000 LKR in small bills on you.

Commercial Bank and Commercial Bank ATMs work perfectly for international cards. Avoid using cards at tiny grocery shops due to high merchant fees.
