Major tourist areas like Colombo 07 the Dutch Hospital precinct and Galle Face Green are incredibly safe well lit and heavily policed during the evening. You can confidently walk there after dinner.

It is generally very safe but avoid walking entirely alone in the dark narrow alleys of Pettah market late at night as it becomes completely deserted. Always use the PickMe app for safe late night transport.
