I am concerned about animal welfare. Are the enclosures spacious and well maintained.

The Dehiwala Zoo has a very mixed reputation regarding animal welfare. While some enclosures, like the free flight aviaries and the beautifully landscaped botanical sections, are spacious and well maintained, other areas are quite outdated.

Many of the larger mammals and big cats are kept in older, concrete enclosures that feel too small by modern international standards. If you are highly sensitive to animal welfare, it might be better to book a jeep safari in a national park to see wildlife roaming freely instead.
