In established tourist cafes reputable restaurants and luxury resorts consuming ice is completely safe. These businesses purchase commercially manufactured cylindrical ice cubes made exclusively from highly purified filtered water.

If the ice cubes have a perfect uniform tubular shape with a hole in the middle you can trust they came from a sterile factory. They are entirely safe to drink.

However if you are buying a drink from a tiny rural street cart or a highly rustic beach shack absolutely ask for no ice. Some small vendors freeze unfiltered municipal tap water in plastic bags and chip it into glasses which carries a massive risk of food poisoning.
