I know Colombo has vegan cafes, but what about small villages? Will I just be eating plain rice?

Sri Lanka is a vegetarian paradise. A standard "Rice and Curry" comes with 4 or 5 different vegetable curries (pumpkin, beetroot, beans, jackfruit) and dhal. You just ask for it without the chicken or fish option.

Watch out for Maldive Fish! They sprinkle it into vegetable dishes for saltiness. Explicitly ask for "No Maldive fish".

I ate better as a vegetarian in the remote guesthouses than I did in Colombo. The home-cooked vegetable curries are mind-blowing.

Good to know about the Maldive fish! I am so excited for pumpkin curry now.

We have a huge Buddhist and Hindu population, so vegetarianism is deeply understood. Just say "Maa-sha nethiwa" (without meat/fish).
