Everyone says to go to the Negombo fish market at dawn. Is it really that spectacular, or just a smelly market?

As a photographer, it is a goldmine. The massive tuna, sharks, and rays being unloaded from the traditional outrigger canoes (oruvas) as the sun comes up is incredible. It is chaotic, raw, and yes, very smelly. Wear closed-toe shoes.

If you don't want to wake up at 5 AM, go around 9 AM to the dry fish market section next door. They lay thousands of fish out on the sand to dry in the sun. Still very cool to see.
