The CMB-MEL A330 direct service is a genuinely good option in 2026. Honest comparison: SriLankan A330-300 economy is a 3-3-3 layout (decent legroom for the price point), the flight is around 10.5 hours, in-flight catering is solid (Sri Lankan curry option is a highlight), entertainment is fine but not premium-airline level. On-time performance has been good since the route launched. Singapore Airlines via SIN is overall better hard product and food, but the SIN stop adds 4 to 6 hours of total travel time, plus a hub airport you may or may not enjoy. For the 250 AUD savings on a direct A330 ride, most Australians take SriLankan unless they specifically value SQ. Worth checking the Sydney and Perth direct services too; both have been added or reinstated. Book the bulkhead or exit row for legroom if you can pay the small extra.

Took SriLankan economy MEL-CMB-MEL recently. No drama, on time, food fine, slept ok. For a holiday I would do it again.

Booking SriLankan direct with the bulkhead row. Qantas points a bonus. Cheers mate.

SriLankan is a Oneworld member, so Qantas frequent flyer points earn and burn work on the route. Useful for Australian travelers.
