I know drinking tap water is generally a bad idea, but is it safe to use for brushing my teeth, or should I use bottled water for that too?

For foreigners, do not drink the tap water. Stick to bottled or filtered water. However, brushing your teeth with tap water in hotels and guesthouses is perfectly safe. The water is treated, it just has different microbes than your stomach is used to if swallowed in large quantities.

I brushed my teeth with tap water for a month and had zero issues. Just make sure bottled water has the SLS (Sri Lanka Standards) logo on the plastic wrapper when you buy it for drinking.
