Our safari driver in Wilpattu asked for a 5000 LKR tip to take us down a path marked No Entry to get closer to a leopard. What happens if we get caught.

If caught by the flying squad rangers, the driver will lose his park license and vehicle immediately. As tourists, you will be heavily fined and immediately expelled from the park for participating in the violation. Restricted zones exist to protect breeding animals and delicate ecosystems. Refuse the offer firmly.

Sometimes they do not even take you to a leopard. They just drive down a restricted road, pretend the leopard left, and still keep your bribe money.

I told my driver absolutely not. Getting a closer photo of a leopard is not worth contributing to corruption or stressing the animal.

The official tracker assigned to your jeep should stop this. If the tracker agrees to it, they are both corrupt. Report their jeep number to the gate on your way out.
