Kandy to Ella train tickets sold out online, what are my options?

I tried to book 1st class reserved tickets for the Kandy to Ella train on the government site, but it says fully booked. Can I still get on this train?

Yes, reserved tickets sell out 30 days in advance. However, you can go to the station on the morning of your travel and buy a 2nd or 3rd class UNRESERVED ticket. They never sell out. It will be crowded, and you might have to stand for a few hours until a seat opens up, but you will get on the train.

Unreserved 3rd class is actually the best cultural experience! You sit in the open doorways with the locals, eat wade (lentil snacks) from the vendors, and the breeze is amazing. Just get to the station 45 mins early.
