I need to buy some basic groceries, snacks, and toiletries. Which supermarket chain is generally the best?

Keells and Arpico are generally the nicest and stock more imported goods (like decent cheese or international chocolates). Cargills Food City is the most common—you will find them in every small town, but their selection is more basic.

Keells has an amazing bakery section. You can get a massive, fresh hot dog bun or vegetable roti for like 30 cents. Great for cheap traveler lunches.
