Cultural guide so what makes Kelaniya special Why it matters the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara just outside Colombo is one of the most sacred and beautiful temples in the country tradition holds the Buddha himself visited this very spot so it is a deeply revered pilgrimage site with a history stretching back over two millennia it is genuinely living and local not a ticketed ruin What makes it special the MURALS the temple is famous for its stunning twentieth century paintings by the renowned artist Solias Mendis depicting Jataka tales and Sinhala history in a distinctive style they are among the finest temple paintings in the country and the reason art lovers come the architecture the dagoba and the serene setting by the river add to it The festival the Duruthu Perahera held here (around January) is one of the great temple processions of the year elephants dancers drummers a spectacular night pageant if your timing matches it is extraordinary Worth a half day from Colombo YES it is close an easy half day or morning trip from the city and a lovely contrast to the urban bustle a genuine sacred site with world class art and far fewer tourists than the cultural triangle giants Visiting respectfully it is an active place of worship so the temple dress applies (shoulders and knees covered shoes off the temple dress threads) move quietly especially during worship ask before photographing people at prayer and treat it as the sacred living space it is Touristy or living genuinely LIVING it is a major local pilgrimage site full of Sri Lankan worshippers not a tourist trap you join the devotees rather than a tour crowd so go for the magnificent murals the deep sacredness and the living devotion an easy beautiful respectful half day from Colombo that most rushing tourists miss

If you can time the Duruthu Perahera do it the procession at Kelaniya is a spectacular night of elephants and dancers and far less swamped than the Kandy one check the date against your trip

The join the devotees rather than a tour crowd feeling is what made it special for me it is a working pilgrimage temple so you experience real devotion not a managed attraction go on a Poya day for the full atmosphere
