Wildlife guide working the east so the Kumana picture for a birder Worth it YES especially for a birder Kumana (in the southeast adjoining Yala on its eastern side hence the old Yala East name) is a BIRD paradise its centrepiece is the Kumana villu a large mangrove swamp lagoon that becomes a major nesting and roosting site for water birds in the season thousands of birds herons egrets storks ibises pelicans spoonbills cormorants and the spectacle of a big mixed nesting colony it is one of the islands premier birding parks and gloriously quieter than Yala Compared to Yala this is the key contrast YALA is leopard famous and consequently CROWDED (the jeep jams you want to avoid are real there) KUMANA is far QUIETER fewer jeeps a wilder remote feel and while it has leopards elephants crocodiles and the mammals too it is the BIRDS and the peace that define it for a birder who values solitude and avifauna over ticking a leopard in a scrum Kumana wins it feels like wilderness not a queue Wildlife beyond birds elephants leopards (present but less the focus) crocodiles wild buffalo and the general dry zone fauna so it is a full safari not only birds Season and June IMPORTANT for the bird NESTING spectacle the prime time is generally the period around and after the southwest monsoon when the villu fills and the breeding colonies form (broadly the months from around May into the later part of the year) so JUNE can be a GOOD time as the nesting season gets going the east is also in its drier calmer season now (the seasonal threads) which suits access do check current conditions as water levels drive the bird activity Access Kumana is in the southeast reached from the Arugam Bay and Pottuvil side (the east coast) or the southeastern route a guide and jeep from that side takes you in pair it with an Arugam Bay stay (the surf and the park) so the answer yes Kumana is superb for a birder the mangrove nesting villu the rich water birds and a wonderfully quiet wild alternative to crowded Yala June as the nesting season builds is a good time access it from the Arugam Bay side with a guide

The far fewer jeeps than Yala point sold me the leopard scrum at Yala put me off entirely so a wild quiet park where you can actually enjoy the wilderness and the birds in peace is exactly what I was looking for

Worth knowing it feels genuinely remote and wild so go with a good guide who knows the park and respect that facilities are minimal that wildness is the appeal but come prepared with water and everything you need for the day

Bring proper optics and go early the water birds are most active in the early morning and a good pair of binoculars or a scope transforms the villu a patient dawn at the nesting colony is the highlight not a fast leopard chase so come in the birding mindset

The Kumana and Arugam Bay combo is brilliant the surf town on the dry east coast in June plus a quiet wild park nearby makes a great low crowd alternative to the southern circuit while the south coast is wet
