Heritage guide from Kurunegala so the forgotten capitals picture The history you have it right after the great northern cities (Anuradhapura then Polonnaruwa) declined the kingdom shifted south and west through a series of shorter lived MEDIEVAL capitals before eventually settling at Kandy this transitional period (roughly the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries) left a trail of overlooked royal sites in the northwest most tourists speed past them between the cultural triangle and Kandy What is at each KURUNEGALA my town a bustling hub dominated by the ETHAGALA the Elephant Rock a huge rock outcrop shaped like a crouching elephant with a temple and a giant Buddha statue and grand views from the top it was a royal capital briefly the rock and the legends (the rock formations named after animals turned to stone) are the draw an easy worthwhile stop DAMBADENIYA a former capital with the remains of the royal complex and a beautiful temple (the Vijayasundararamaya) that once housed the sacred Tooth Relic atmospheric and quiet PANDUWASNUWARA the ruins of a medieval royal city palace moat and monastic remains genuinely off the beaten path you may have it to yourself YAPAHUWA the spectacular one a rock fortress with a magnificent ornamental stairway (a famous carved staircase) a dramatic later capital Worth a detour YES for a HISTORY BUFF absolutely these sites tell the story the famous three cities do not the fall and the wandering capitals and you get them in PEACE without crowds it is the deep cut for someone who loves the full historical arc the casual visitor may skip them but you are not casual How to string them together they lie in the NORTHWEST roughly on or near the route between the cultural triangle (Anuradhapura) and Kandy or Colombo so build a forgotten capitals day or two Kurunegala as a base (it is a transport hub) and loop out to Dambadeniya Panduwasnuwara and Yapahuwa a car and driver makes it easy as they are spread out so yes do the forgotten medieval capitals Kurunegala and its elephant rock Dambadeniya Panduwasnuwara and the stunning Yapahuwa stairway a peaceful deeply rewarding history detour through the kingdoms that bridged the ancient cities and Kandy
Panduwasnuwara was the highlight for me precisely because there was almost no one there standing in a forgotten royal city with just the ruins and the quiet is a different experience from the crowded big three a history lovers dream
Kurunegala and its elephant rock Dambadeniya Panduwasnuwara and the stunning Yapahuwa stairway a peaceful history detour through the kingdoms bridging the ancient cities and Kandy this is exactly the overlooked history I crave thank you for mapping the arc
Climb the Ethagala the elephant rock at Kurunegala in the late afternoon the views over the town and the lake at sunset are superb and it is a real local pilgrimage and leisure spot so you see everyday life alongside the history
