We want to have a private bonfire on the beach in Mirissa and drink our own beers. Are fires allowed on the sand and will police bother us.

Lighting private bonfires on the beach is generally not allowed without permission from the Coast Guard or local authorities due to sea turtle nesting sites and safety hazards. Additionally, drinking alcohol on public beaches is illegal in Sri Lanka. While police are sometimes lenient, drinking your own alcohol next to an illegal fire is a guaranteed way to get fined.

Glass bottles on the beach are also strictly banned. If you drop one, it is a nightmare to clean up.

Got it. We will just go to a beach bar instead. Thanks for the warning.

Please do not do this. The ash and buried hot coals severely injure local stray dogs and barefoot walkers the next morning.

If you want a bonfire, book a table at one of the beachfront restaurants. They light massive fires for guests legally.
