Learning Sinhala properly beyond a phrasebook are there courses apps tutors and is it worth it for a longer stay
I am here for a longer stay and I want to really learn some Sinhala not just memorise a few phrases from a list Is it worth learning how hard is it for an English speaker are there language courses or tutors or apps that actually work should I learn the script too and how do locals react to a foreigner making a real effort I want to go beyond hello and thank you Anyone who learned some Sinhala please tell me how and whether it was worth it

Sinhala tutor so the learning the language picture Is it worth it ABSOLUTELY for a longer stay even modest Sinhala transforms your experience locals are genuinely delighted and surprised when a foreigner makes a real effort (very few do) it opens doors warmth and respect you get better prices truer interactions and real friendships it is one of the best investments for a deeper stay How hard for an English speaker SPOKEN Sinhala basics are quite learnable the grammar differs (verb at the end of the sentence different structure) and there are sounds to master but for everyday conversational Sinhala you can make real progress the colloquial spoken form is simpler than the formal literary one focus on SPOKEN colloquial Sinhala first that is what you actually use The SCRIPT a choice the beautiful rounded Sinhala script is a separate task learning to READ it is rewarding and helps but is NOT essential for SPEAKING if your goal is to converse focus on spoken Sinhala (learn it by ear and in transliteration) and treat the script as an optional bonus for a longer stay learning the alphabet is a nice deeper project if you have time Courses tutors apps that work a private TUTOR is the most effective (one on one lessons are widely available and cheap here ask locally or at language schools in Colombo and Kandy a few hours a week accelerates you fast) language SCHOOLS in Colombo offer Sinhala courses APPS and online there are apps and online resources and YouTube channels for Sinhala (fewer than for big world languages but enough to support you) combine an app for vocabulary with a real tutor for speaking IMMERSION is the secret weapon practise constantly at the kade with your hosts the tuk tuk driver everyone is a willing teacher How locals react with DELIGHT this is the joy a foreigner speaking Sinhala is met with huge warmth encouragement and patience nobody laughs they love it so do not be shy your stumbling efforts are rewarded with smiles and help so yes it is very worth it for a longer stay focus on SPOKEN colloquial Sinhala first (script optional) get a cheap private tutor a few hours a week back it with an app and practise constantly with delighted locals and you will go far beyond hello and thank you it deepens everything
One tip learn the everyday phrases your hosts and the kade folk use and just keep using them daily the constant friendly practice with people who want you to succeed beats hours of solo study a tutor plus daily real use is the winning combination
Focus on spoken colloquial Sinhala first script optional get a cheap private tutor a few hours a week back it with an app and practise with delighted locals this is exactly the real learning path I wanted not just a phrase list thank you
Seconding the locals react with delight even a few real sentences of Sinhala at the kade or with a tuk tuk driver changed how I was treated completely the effort is repaid many times over in warmth do not worry about mistakes
Following up booked a private tutor for a few hours a week as suggested and it is the best decision of my long stay progressing fast in spoken Sinhala and the daily practice with my homestay family cements it thank you for the steer
