I am going on a blue whale tour. Is a 70 to 200mm lens enough reach, or do the ethical boats stay too far back.

Ethical boats maintain a 100-meter distance. A 70-200mm is okay because blue whales are absolutely massive, but a 100-400mm or a 1.4x teleconverter on your 200mm is the sweet spot. You will get great shots of the tail flukes when they dive. Do not bring a tripod; the boat rocks way too much.

Make sure your camera has good weather sealing. The salt spray on the front deck is brutal.

Shoot at a very fast shutter speed (1/1000s+) to compensate for the boat bouncing.
