Near Sigiriya, locals have baby toque macaques chained up and ask tourists for money to hold them. What are the regulations on keeping wild monkeys as pets.

It is strictly illegal under the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance to capture, hold, or exhibit wild primates for profit in Sri Lanka without a permit (which is never granted for roadside begging). They poach the babies by killing the mothers. Do not pay them. Take a photo of the location and report it to the DWC hotline.

Paying them only creates demand for more poaching. It is a cruel scam disguised as a rescue operation.
