Madu River or Negombo lagoon mangrove tour - which is better?
I love nature boat trips. Which mangrove/lagoon tour is more authentic and less touristy - Madu River or Negombo?

Madu River is more scenic with wider waterways, islands, and the famous cinnamon island stop. It can get busy with tour groups though. Negombo lagoon is quieter, more local, and you see traditional fishing. If you want nature and photos, Madu River. For a peaceful local experience, Negombo.
Both are good but go early morning (7-8am) to avoid crowds and heat on Madu River. Book a small private boat rather than the big group ones.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
