Do I need to take prescription malaria pills before visiting rural areas or ancient ruins? How prevalent is Dengue fever right now?

Sri Lanka was declared malaria-free by the WHO years ago, so anti-malarials are completely unnecessary. However, Dengue is a real risk in urban areas like Colombo and after heavy rains. Use a high-quality DEET insect repellent.

Dengue mosquitoes bite mostly during the early morning and late afternoon. Wear loose, long-sleeved linen shirts and keep windows closed or use mosquito nets at night.
