I love an off track ruin and I read about Maligawila in the deep southeast which has a huge ancient STANDING Buddha carved from a single rock (and a Bodhisattva statue nearby) in a peaceful forest setting far from the tourist trail Is it worth the detour what is the experience like and how remote is it how do I combine it with the southeast and is the dry southeast a good June choice History and off track lovers please tell me about Maligawila

Heritage guide so the Maligawila picture a real off track gem What it is MALIGAWILA in the deep southeast (near Buttala and Monaragala) is home to a magnificent ancient STANDING BUDDHA statue a tall elegant figure carved from a SINGLE slab of limestone (one of the largest free standing ancient Buddha statues of its kind dating to around the seventh century) it was felled and broken over the centuries and has been restored and re erected so it stands serene again nearby is a separate Bodhisattva (Maitreya) statue (a beautiful standing figure) the two great statues a short walk apart in the forest The experience PEACE and grandeur the statues stand in a quiet FOREST setting reached by a pleasant walk through the trees the combination of the towering ancient sculpture the serenity the forest and the near total ABSENCE of crowds is magical contemplative and atmospheric exactly the off track ruin feeling you love the artistry of the standing Buddha up close is moving History an important ancient site (masterpieces of early medieval Sinhalese sculpture) with the story of their fall and restoration adding poignancy How remote genuinely OFF the trail in the southeast interior you will likely share it with only a few local pilgrims Combining with the southeast PERFECT pair it with the eastern interior and southeast circuit GAL OYA (the boat safari) AMPARA (the eastern interior) the route between the hill country (Ella is not far via Buttala) and the east or a southeast loop with Yala and Kataragama a car or guide helps as it is remote June and the dry southeast GOOD the southeast and eastern dry zone are in their DRIER season now (the southwest monsoon hits the west and hills while the southeast is drier) so June is a reasonable time pleasant for the forest walk to the statues So yes Maligawila is well worth the detour a magnificent ancient standing Buddha carved from a single rock (plus a Bodhisattva) in a peaceful forest setting gloriously off the tourist trail pair it with Gal Oya Ampara or an Ella to east route and June is a decent dry season time for that southeastern corner a serene hidden heritage gem

Take your time on the forest walk to the Bodhisattva statue it is a short peaceful stroll from the main standing Buddha and having both great ancient figures almost to yourself in the woodland quiet is the real magic of Maligawila do not rush it sit and absorb the serenity

The single rock carving of a statue that size is staggering when you stand beneath it and knowing it was toppled and painstakingly re erected adds to the awe these off track ancient masterpieces with no crowds are the most moving heritage I have seen here

Combining Maligawila with Gal Oya made a superb offbeat southeast leg for me a giant ancient statue in silent forest then a boat safari among swimming elephants and barely a tourist in sight the deep southeast is a revelation for off track travel
