Guide who loves the remote spots so the Meemure picture a true off grid gem What it is MEEMURE is a remote isolated VILLAGE deep within the KNUCKLES mountain range (the Knuckles conservation area the Knuckles threads) it is one of the most far flung traditional villages in the country long cut off (reached only by a rough track) so it retains a wonderfully authentic untouched village life surrounded by dramatic mountain wilderness it is the classic end of the road place Is it worth the journey YES if you want RAW remote authentic village and mountain it is special the journey itself is part of it (a rough bumpy road through breathtaking Knuckles scenery) and the reward is a genuine traditional village in a stunning setting far from tourism The experience VILLAGE LIFE simple traditional rural life (paddy fields chena cultivation village ways homestays with families) a glimpse of old Sri Lanka NATURE the Knuckles wilderness all around (forest rivers waterfalls birdlife the cool mountain air) TREKS and hikes from the village (guided treks into the Knuckles to waterfalls peaks and viewpoints) the iconic LAKEGALA the towering rock mountain that looms over Meemure (a sacred dramatic peak with legend Lakegala is said to feature in the Ramayana the climb is serious and for experienced trekkers with a guide but the sight of it is unforgettable) RIVERS for a swim the sense of deep peace and isolation How to get there the adventure it is a journey via the Kandy and Hunnasgiriya side then a ROUGH ROAD (a bumpy unpaved mountain track) into the Knuckles to Meemure (a 4WD or a local vehicle the public transport is very limited an occasional rugged service) hiring a vehicle or a tour or arranging transport through your homestay is the way it is slow and rough but scenic allow time for the journey Where to stay HOMESTAYS the way to stay simple family homestays and basic guesthouses in the village (book ahead or arrange via a Knuckles tour operator) staying with a village family is the authentic experience (home cooked meals simple rooms) do not expect luxury (basic facilities limited electricity and connectivity which is part of the charm) How many days at least ONE NIGHT (ideally TWO) to make the rough journey worthwhile and to do a trek and soak up the village a couple of nights lets you trek the Knuckles properly and unwind June note the Knuckles can be wet and misty (and leeches in the wet the natural threads) June is the southwest monsoon so expect some rain and mist in the hills (check conditions bring rain gear and leech socks) but it can still be a magical atmospheric time just be prepared for mountain weather So yes Meemure is worth the journey for raw remote authentic village and mountain a far flung traditional village deep in the stunning Knuckles beneath the iconic Lakegala rock get there via Kandy and a rough mountain track (4WD or arranged transport) stay in a village HOMESTAY for at least a night or two (basic and authentic) trek the Knuckles and soak up the isolation come prepared for wet misty hill weather in June a genuine end of the road adventure
