There are so many whale watching boats in Mirissa. How do I choose a responsible operator that doesn't harass the whales and has decent naturalists on board?

Look for operators who are members of the Sri Lanka Whale Watching Association and follow the 100m approach rule. 'Mirissa Whale Watching' and 'Raja & the Whale' have good reputations for responsible practices and English-speaking naturalists. Avoid any boat that promises 'guaranteed' sightings or gets too close.

We went with Raja & the Whale last season. The naturalist was excellent and explained the difference between blue and sperm whales. The boat was not overcrowded.

Morning departures (6:30-7am) have calmer seas and better light for photography. Book the day before if the forecast is good.
