Should I pack strong DEET from home, or are the local mosquito repellents in Sri Lanka better suited for tropical bugs?

Bring one bottle of strong DEET for jungle treks or safaris. For everyday evening use, buy a local brand called "Soffel" (the pink floral one). It smells great, isn’t sticky, and works perfectly for evenings on the beach.

You can also buy natural citronella oil here very cheaply. It is chemical-free and works well, though you have to reapply it more frequently than DEET.

Soffel is magic. You can buy it at any Food City or Keells supermarket for a couple of dollars. Don’t weigh your bag down with 5 cans of Off! from home.
