Negombo local so the Munneswaram picture (it is near my side of the coast) What it is MUNNESWARAM near Chilaw (north of Negombo on the west coast) is one of the most important and ancient HINDU temple complexes in Sri Lanka a major regional pilgrimage centre it is actually a complex of several temples (the main one dedicated to Shiva plus others including a temple to the goddess) with a deep history and a strong RAMAYANA connection (legend links it to Rama who is said to have worshipped Shiva here after the war so it is an important Ramayana trail site the Ramayana threads) The experience it is a LIVING active temple not a ruin so you get the full sensory Hindu temple experience the colourful gopuram and shrines the rituals and pujas (ceremonies with bells fire camphor and offerings) the devotees the atmosphere of active worship it is vivid and spiritual if you time it for a PUJA (ceremony times) you see the ritual life the big FESTIVAL (the annual Munneswaram festival) is a major dramatic event (processions and rituals) if your visit coincides it is extraordinary though busy Can a respectful non Hindu visit YES Hindu temples generally welcome respectful visitors of any faith you can go observe and soak up the atmosphere just be respectful and follow the etiquette Etiquette to know DRESS modestly (cover shoulders and knees) remove SHOES (and often the custom of bare feet and sometimes men removing shirts at certain inner shrines follow the local lead) be respectful during ceremonies (watch quietly do not get in the way of worshippers) ASK before photographing (photography may be restricted in inner shrines or during rituals respect signs and the priests) you may be offered a blessing or vibhuti (sacred ash) or to make a small offering accept graciously if comfortable behave as a quiet respectful guest in an active place of worship Getting there it is near CHILAW on the west coast north of Negombo so from the NEGOMBO or west coast side it is an EASY trip (a reasonable drive up the coast) combine it with the Negombo area or a west coast journey a tuk tuk or car gets you there easily so yes Munneswaram is well worth it a major ancient living Hindu temple complex near Chilaw with a strong Ramayana connection vivid rituals and a great festival respectful non Hindu visitors are welcome (dress modestly shoes off ask before photos behave as a quiet guest) and it is an easy trip up the coast from the Negombo side a wonderful window into Hindu devotional life away from the Jaffna trail
A major ancient living Hindu temple complex near Chilaw with a strong Ramayana connection vivid rituals and a festival respectful visitors welcome with modest dress shoes off and quiet courtesy and an easy trip from the Negombo side this is exactly the west coast kovil experience I wanted thank you
