Negombo guide and lagoon boatman so what my town is really worth Worth more than a stopover YES Negombo has a genuine working soul it is a real fishing town with character not just an airport dormitory give it a day or two especially to ease in or out of the country gently rather than racing What to do the LAGOON the heart of it a boat trip on the Negombo lagoon and into the network of canals and mangroves is lovely birdlife fishing communities the catch coming in I run these and visitors love the quiet water and the working life the FISH MARKET the big lively fish market (the Lellama) is a raw authentic spectacle especially in the morning the boats the auction the drying fish go early it is real Sri Lanka the DUTCH CANAL the old Dutch era canal runs through town atmospheric to walk or cycle along the CHURCHES Negombo is heavily Catholic (little Rome) with grand churches St Marys is impressive and the Sunday and festival atmosphere is unique here the FISHING BEACH and the outrigger boats (the oruwa) lined up the beach itself is okay (not the islands best but fine for a stroll and sunset and the seafood) Beach honest take the Negombo beach is pleasant enough for a first or last night swim and sunset but it is a working town beach not a postcard cove come for the town life and the lagoon not a dream beach (head south or east for those) First or last stop PERFECT it is close to the airport (a short transfer not the long haul to the south at dawn) so a final night here removes the airport rush (the departure threads) and as a FIRST stop it is a gentle real introduction seafood lagoon and town before you dive into the country Seafood eat the fresh fish and crab it is a fishing town the seafood is excellent and good value so yes give Negombo a day or two for the lagoon boat the fish market the Dutch canal the little Rome churches and the fishing life it is a characterful real town and the ideal gentle first or last stop just do not expect a dream beach
A lagoon boat the fish market the Dutch canal the little Rome churches and the fishing life a characterful real town and the ideal gentle first or last stop this is exactly the working soul I hoped for not a dream beach but real and I love that thank you
The Catholic churches and the Sunday atmosphere genuinely surprised me Negombo feels different from the Buddhist heartland the little Rome character with the fishing town life is a unique mix worth experiencing
Seconding the seafood it is a fishing town so the fresh fish and crab are excellent and cheaper than the tourist beach restaurants down south eat where the catch lands for the best value seafood of the trip
The Dutch canal cycle is a lovely quiet way to see the town and the fishing life away from the beach strip rent a bike for a couple of hours and follow the canal it shows you a Negombo most stopover tourists never see
Do the fish market early in the morning when the boats land it is at its most alive then by midday it winds down the dawn auction and the sheer scale of the catch is the real spectacle worth the early start
As a Negombo local I always tell guests to spend the FIRST night here not just the last easing in with a lagoon morning and good seafood beats a groggy dash south from the airport you arrive properly into the country
