I read about a historic Dutch Belfry (Kayman's Gate) hiding somewhere in the Pettah market. Where exactly is it, and is it accessible.

Kayman's Gate is located at the intersection of Main Street and 4th Cross Street in Pettah. It is an old, freestanding bell tower from the 16th century. It is not a museum you can enter; it just sits in the middle of the chaotic street surrounded by vendors and parked trucks. It is a brilliant photo op showing ancient history clashing with modern street markets.

The bell originally belonged to a Portuguese church in Kotte and was moved there by the Dutch.

Fascinating. I love finding old architecture mixed into daily life like that.

I walked right past it twice because it is swallowed up by the market stalls. Look up!
