Ella has become highly commercialized, and many cafes on the main strip charge premium western prices. To avoid hidden fees, you must always ask explicitly if the 10 percent service charge and government taxes are already included in the menu prices before ordering. To find reasonably priced, authentic food, step away from the main tourist road and visit smaller, family run spots like Matey Hut or Jade Green, where the prices are highly transparent and the food is vastly superior.

People outside stations offer to "help" buy tickets but charge large markups. They may buy cheap third-class tickets and sell as more expensive classes.
