Everyone talks about the Kandy to Ella train ride. Is it genuinely worth dedicating a whole day to this, and which side of the train offers the best views.

Yes, the Ella train journey is absolutely worth the hype. The route winds through incredibly lush green tea plantations, misty mountains, and dramatic valleys, offering scenery you cannot see from the roads. For the best views on the journey from Kandy to Ella, you should try to sit on the right side of the train. The views on the right are spectacular as you pass through Nuwara Eliya and approach the hill country. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful train rides in the entire world.

Make sure you book well in advance. If you cannot get a reserved seat, you can buy an unreserved ticket on the day. You might have to stand for the first few hours, but sitting in the open doorway with your legs hanging out while the train moves slowly through the tea fields is the ultimate Sri Lankan experience.
