Should I pack a heavy Gore-Tex raincoat, or just buy a cheap umbrella when I arrive?

Buy an umbrella locally! A raincoat will make you sweat profusely in the 30°C tropical humidity. You will be soaked from sweat instead of rain. An umbrella provides shade from the blazing sun AND keeps you dry in the rain.

The only time a raincoat/plastic poncho is useful is if you are riding a rented scooter in a downpour.

Leaving the raincoat at home. Thanks for saving me the packing space!

I brought a heavy Gore-Tex jacket and never wore it once. I just bought a $3 umbrella at a Food City supermarket and it saved my life.
