Tea estate host so let me tell you if it lives up to the dream Is it real YES staying at a restored colonial PLANTERS BUNGALOW on a working tea estate is one of the hill countrys signature experiences these are the old British era estate managers houses lovingly restored into boutique accommodation set amid the tea The experience it is special the BUNGALOW characterful colonial architecture log fires (the hills get cool especially at night) antique furnishings deep verandahs with sweeping views over the tea slopes a handful of rooms intimate not a big hotel the SERVICE the traditional bungalow comes with a dedicated staff often including a butler or house manager and a cook who looks after you beautifully the colonial style hospitality (afternoon tea on the lawn cooked breakfasts) is part of the charm the MEALS often included and home cooked (a set menu the estate cook does both Sri Lankan and the colonial comfort dishes) eaten together it is a lovely sociable house party feel the ESTATE the setting is the magic walks through the tea fields a tour of the tea factory to see the leaf processed picking with the pluckers cool misty mornings birdsong total peace Worth the splurge for a special night or two YES it is more expensive than a normal guesthouse (it is the boutique luxury end so several times the price of a budget room) but for the unique once in a trip experience of the bungalow the service the setting and the history it is worth it for a night or two as a treat balance it with cheaper stays elsewhere Areas the tea country HATTON and the Bogawantalawa and Dickoya valleys (the classic estate bungalow heartland near the Castlereagh and Maskeliya reservoirs) NUWARA ELIYA and around ELLA and the Uva tea country too the Hatton Dickoya area is the iconic one June and the rain the hill country is WET now (the southwest monsoon) so expect mist and rain BUT honestly the mist log fires and a cosy bungalow with tea and views of cloud rolling over the slopes is ATMOSPHERIC and romantic in the rain just pack warm layers and embrace the cosy misty mood it suits the colonial bungalow feeling perfectly so yes it lives up to the dream a restored planters bungalow on a working estate with a butler home cooked meals tea field walks and colonial charm is worth the splurge for a night or two best in the Hatton Dickoya tea heartland and rather magical even in the June mist
Do the tea factory tour and a walk with the pluckers from the bungalow understanding how the leaf in your cup is grown plucked and processed right there on the estate deepens the whole stay it is not just a pretty house it is a living tea world
Following up the embrace the misty rain rather than fear it advice changed my plan I was going to avoid the hills in June but a cosy bungalow with cloud rolling over the tea and a fire sounds more romantic than sunshine thank you
The estates are also wonderful for birds the tea slopes and the patches of forest around the bungalows have lovely hill country birdlife so a birder gets an extra layer the early misty mornings on the verandah are full of song
We did one night as a splurge in the middle of a budget trip and it was the highlight the log fire the mist over the tea the butler bringing tea on the verandah balance one special bungalow night against cheaper stays and it is affordable as a treat
A restored planters bungalow with a butler home cooked meals tea field walks and colonial charm worth the splurge for a night or two in the Hatton Dickoya heartland and magical even in the June mist this is exactly the dream confirmed thank you
Pack warm layers people underestimate how cool the hill country gets at night especially in a big old bungalow with the mist in the high tea country an evening by the fire needs a jumper bring warm clothes for the upcountry
