Hill country guide and paraglider so the taking to the air picture Is it a thing YES paragliding happens in Sri Lanka the hill country has sites where tandem paragliding flights run a small but real scene the launches use the hills and the wind and a tandem flight with a qualified pilot lets a beginner fly with no experience you are strapped in front of the pilot who does all the flying Where the hill country and certain upcountry sites with the right terrain and wind (the scene centres on a few established launch areas in the hills) the operators know the sites and the seasons go with an established paragliding operator not a fly by night What it is like spectacular a tandem flight floating over the tea covered hills the valleys and the patchwork below silent but for the wind it is the most serene way to see the hill country from the air gentle floating not a stomach drop thrill (though the launch and any thermals add spice) Safe and the operator paragliding is weather and skill critical so the OPERATOR and PILOT qualifications are everything fly only with a properly qualified experienced tandem pilot and a reputable operator with good equipment and a safety record ask about the pilot certification check the kit and never fly with an unqualified cowboy this is the one rule that matters June and the monsoon THE key issue paragliding needs the right wind and clear stable conditions and is very weather dependent the monsoon brings unsettled wind and rain so June flying in the wet hill regions is often GROUNDED or limited the dry stable seasons are the prime flying window in June expect weather dependence and possible cancellation check with the operator for the current conditions and have flexibility do not pin a single day on it Versus seaplane and microlight the seaplane is enclosed transport with a view the microlight (the cultural triangle flights) is a powered low slow scenic joy ride paragliding is the SILENT unpowered closest to free flight you float on the wind itself the purest flying feeling of the three so the verdict yes you can paraglide here tandem over the gorgeous hill country fly only with a qualified pilot and reputable operator and accept that June monsoon weather may ground it so stay flexible and grab a clear stable window for the most serene flight of your trip
The stay flexible do not pin one day on it advice is key for any weather dependent activity here build paragliding into a few days in the hills so a grounded day still leaves a window rather than a single chance
Following up does the insurance question apply here like the canyoning thread I should check my policy covers paragliding before I book right the adventure exclusions caught someone out in the insurance threads
Floating silent over the tea hills was the most serene thing I did here it is gentle not terrifying so even the nervous can do a tandem the launch is the only heart in mouth moment then it is pure calm
The check the pilot certification and the kit rule is the whole thing with paragliding more than any other activity the weather and the pilot are life and death so pay for the established qualified operator and never the cheap cowboy
Yes absolutely confirm your travel insurance covers paragliding many policies exclude it as a hazardous activity check before you fly as the insurance threads warn and carry the proof do not assume the standard policy includes it
Tandem over the hill country fly only with a qualified pilot and reputable operator and stay flexible for the June weather this is exactly what I wanted the silent unpowered closest to free flight sold me thank you
