Yes, the rules vary by religion. For Kadurugoda (Buddhist ruins), standard rules apply: cover shoulders/knees, remove shoes, and NEVER pose with your back to the stupas. For Nallur Kandaswamy (active Hindu temple), photography is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN inside the temple walls. Men must remove their shirts to enter, and women must wear long modest clothing. You can only photograph the exterior of Nallur.

Good to know. Phone away inside Nallur, no backwards selfies at the ruins.

Always ask for permission first with a smile and a nod. Usually they do not mind outside the gates.

Nallur is incredibly strict. They have guards watching for phones. Keep it in your bag.

Do not use a drone near Nallur, the city center is heavily populated.

The red and white striped walls of the Hindu temples make for great exterior shots.

The architecture of Kadurugoda is amazing. The miniature stupas look incredible at sunset.
