Walking on foot near wild elephants is incredibly dangerous and banned in major parks like Yala. However, you CAN do a safe, guided walking safari in Gal Oya National Park with the indigenous Vedda community. They are expert trackers who know the jungle intimately. They will guide you safely through the bush to observe elephants from a respectful distance without disturbing them.

Gal Oya sounds perfect. I am booking a Vedda trek now.

Bring a 400mm or longer. The Vedda guides will keep you quite far back for safety.

What focal length lens do I need if I am on foot in Gal Oya

Gal Oya also offers a boat safari where you can photograph elephants swimming. It is much safer and incredible.

Make sure to turn off any autofocus beeps on your camera. Total silence is required.

Do not try to hike in the buffer zones of Minneriya alone to get photos. Tourists have been killed doing this.
