Photography rules and tripod use inside ancient ruins
8 Answers from travellers
For personal photography with a standard tripod your regular entrance ticket is usually sufficient However you must not block the walking paths of pilgrims making offerings The most absolute rule is NEVER pose with your back to a Buddha statue The guards will force you to delete the photos immediately
Yes the sandy areas right in front of the statues are sacred Shoes and hats must be removed
If you bring massive lighting rigs or commercial gear you need a permit from the Cultural Fund
Do I need to take off my shoes while setting up the tripod
The sand gets blisteringly hot by 11 AM Wear thick dark socks
Great advice I will bring a small travel tripod and wear socks
I set up my tripod near Ruwanwelisaya and no one bothered me Just be respectful
Do not use a flash inside the image houses it ruins the ancient paint
