The most important rule in Sri Lanka: NEVER take a photo posing with your back turned to a Buddha statue. This is considered deeply disrespectful. You must stand sideways or face the statue while someone takes your photo. Also, remove your hat and shoes when standing on the sandy compounds around the statues, and turn off your camera flash.

Do not climb on the ruined brick walls to get a better angle either. It is illegal.
