The absolute golden rule in Sri Lankan culture is NEVER take a photograph posing with your back turned to a Buddha statue or relic. It is deeply offensive. You must stand sideways or face the object. Photography of the architecture is generally allowed, but turn off your flash to protect the ancient pigments. Also, never take photos inside the inner sanctum where the actual tooth relic is housed; guards will confiscate your camera.

Do not use a tripod inside. It blocks the path of local pilgrims who are there to worship.

Make sure your shoulders and knees are covered, otherwise they will not even let you past the security gate with your camera.
