Photography rules inside the Dambulla Cave Temples

Are we allowed to take photos of the ancient Buddha statues inside the Dambulla Cave Temples. I read varying reports online.

Yes, you can take photos of the statues and the ceiling murals, but you MUST turn your flash completely off. The bright flashes degrade the ancient paint. More importantly, NEVER take a selfie or a photo posing with your back turned to the statues. The temple guards are very strict and will confiscate your camera or force you to delete the photos immediately.

It is quite dark inside some of the caves, so you need a camera that handles high ISO well since you cannot use flash.

Also, do not try to use a tripod. The walkways are narrow and it blocks the pilgrims.
