I have read mixed reviews about elephants being chained in the river at Pinnawala. Is there a better, more ethical sanctuary context to see rescued elephants?

Agree, ETH is beautiful. You can witness them feeding the babies milk from a viewing platform at designated hours. No riding, no chaining, no forced contact.

Skip Pinnawala completely. Go to the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Udawalawe instead. It is supported by the Born Free Foundation; the orphaned calves are kept with minimal human interaction and released back into the wild.
