Pinnawala or Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home for ethical viewing
I work in animal welfare back home and want to see Sri Lankan elephants ethically Pinnawala Orphanage near Kegalle is the famous one but I read mixed reports about chained elephants and tourist photo ops Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home apparently releases rescued calves back to wild Which actually is the ethical choice and is there any chance to volunteer briefly

Genuinely ethical Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home (ETH) Run by Department of Wildlife since 1995 Rescued orphan calves are rehabilitated and released back to Udawalawe National Park once they can fend for themselves Over 150 elephants released to wild Tourists view feeding sessions from a distance no contact no rides no photo ops Sessions 0930 1230 1530 1830 daily Entry 500 LKR Combine with a Udawalawe safari Pinnawala by contrast is a captive facility no release program elephants are kept chained at night and used for tourist bathing photos It generates revenue but is no longer considered ethical by IUCN standards For volunteering official channels only Born Free Foundation occasionally partners with ETH for short term wildlife welfare placements
For wild elephants Udawalawe safari has the highest elephant density of any park year round dry zone reliability Minneriya is seasonal July to September only
Wasgamuwa is another underrated dry zone park for ethical elephant viewing fewer jeeps than Udawalawe
Avoid any operator advertising elephant rides walking with elephants or elephant bathing These are red flags regardless of facility
Pinnawala is on most tour itineraries because Kegalle is convenient between Colombo and Kandy ETH requires a deliberate detour south but it is worth it
