I want to rent a scooter to go between Unawatuna and Midigama. Are police checkpoints common? Do I need an IDP?

Yes, checkpoints are very common on the Matara road. By law, you must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) with a motorcycle endorsement, AND it must be endorsed by the AAC in Colombo. Without it, you will be fined.

A local told me the fine is about 2500 LKR if you don't have the proper license. Make sure you get a receipt if you pay a fine.

Thanks everyone, I have my endorsed IDP so I should be good. I will watch out for the white lines.

Do not cross the solid white line when overtaking! The police strictly enforce the white line rule and will fine you on the spot.

I got stopped twice. As long as you are wearing a helmet, have your shirt on, and have your IDP, they are very polite and just wave you through after a quick check.
