If you only had time for one ancient city ruin, which would you pick? I plan to rent a bicycle to explore.

Polonnaruwa is much better for cycling. The ruins are closer together, more intact, and the entire site is shaded by massive trees. Anuradhapura is older and grander, but the stupas are spread out over a modern city, making it exhausting to cycle in the sun.

Agreed on Polonnaruwa! The Gal Vihara (massive Buddhas carved into granite rock face) at the end of the bicycle loop is breathtaking. Watch out for the monkeys stealing water bottles from your bike basket!
