Festival planner needing to understand the rhythm I gather every full moon is a Poya public holiday with alcohol sales stopped and a particular atmosphere and there are major festival Poyas worth timing for How does Poya actually affect a travelling tourist what closes what opens which months have the big celebrations and how do I build a June to July trip that catches the good festivals without being caught out by closures

Cultural calendar is my subject so the full rhythm Poya basics every full moon day is a Poya a Buddhist public holiday twelve or thirteen a year each commemorating an event in the Buddhist story On any Poya alcohol sales stop bottle shops bars and even hotel bars technically should not serve (tourist hotels sometimes discreetly serve room service use to guests but do not rely on it) meat sales and slaughter reduce many locals observe sila and the temples fill with white clad devotees What closes and opens government offices banks and many shops close it is a holiday liquor is the firm one Public transport RUNS often busier with pilgrims temples are gloriously OPEN and active this is the day to visit one tourist sites and restaurants mostly operate normally beaches and nature carry on the practical hit is just the alcohol and the bank closure plan a bottle purchase the day before if you want a sunset beer The major festival Poyas worth timing Vesak in May the biggest the festival of the Buddhas birth enlightenment and passing lantern displays pandals dansala free food stalls cities transformed in light Poson in June (very relevant to your trip) commemorating the arrival of Buddhism to the island centred spectacularly on Anuradhapura and Mihintale pilgrims in the hundreds of thousands lanterns and dansala a profound time to be in the north central region Esala in July or August the Kandy Perahera season the grandest processional festival Your June to July build catch Poson in the cultural triangle be at Mihintale or Anuradhapura for the full moon for the pilgrimage spectacle then time the back end toward the start of the Esala Perahera in Kandy checking the exact 2026 dates the two great festivals bracket your window beautifully just carry the alcohol awareness and the bank closure into the planning

Poson at Anuradhapura is now the centrepiece of the trip the alcohol and bank notes are the only real catch outs and both are easily planned around thank you

Practical addition shops shut on the festival Poyas so stock any essentials the day before Poson and the big ones empty the supermarket shelves by midday before
