We are driving our tuk-tuk around the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. We heard the macaques will rip the canvas roof and steal things. How do we prevent this while we explore the temples.

The macaques in Polonnaruwa are notorious. Do not leave any food, water bottles, or plastic bags visible in the cab. Zip down all the side rain-flaps completely to seal the vehicle before you walk away to see the ruins. Park in open, sunny areas rather than directly under the large banyan trees where the troops hang out.

If they tear the canvas roof, the rental company will charge you a hefty fee from your deposit to stitch it. Keep those flaps zipped!

They literally unzipped my backpack that I left on the back seat. Take all your valuables with you into the temple grounds.

Do not leave bananas in the glove box. They can smell them through the plastic dashboard.

At the Gal Vihara parking lot, there are usually local kids who will watch your tuk-tuk with a stick to keep monkeys away for 100 LKR. It is worth paying them.
