I got nipped by a stray dog while eating near a food stall on the beach. What is the immediate safety protocol for health concerns.

Do not panic, but act immediately. Wash the wound vigorously with soap and running water for 15 solid minutes. This physically destroys the rabies virus. Then, go directly to the nearest major Government General Hospital. They will give you the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) vaccine for free. Do not wait to see if the dog looks sick.

If the dog had a clipped ear, it means an NGO vaccinated it, but you MUST still get the shots to be safe.

Do not rely on small private clinics for this. They often do not stock the Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIG) you might need.

I got scratched in Weligama and went to Matara hospital. The staff was incredibly efficient. Just bring your passport.

In government hospitals, it is completely free for everyone, including tourists.

Also, never pet the stray puppies near food stalls. The mothers get defensive instantly.
