Wellness sceptic here Every hotel offers an Ayurveda massage and I suspect most are spa treatments wearing the word How do I distinguish genuine Ayurveda with a physician consultation and a treatment plan from a scented oil rub with a Sanskrit menu Is a meaningful experience possible in a few days or does real Ayurveda demand the multi week Panchakarma commitment and what should I look for to avoid paying premium for theatre

Ayurveda physician from a family practice so I will be honest about my own field including its tourist dilution You are right to be sceptical most hotel Ayurveda is a pleasant oil massage with the vocabulary borrowed enjoyable harmless not medicine How to tell genuine from theatre the single clearest marker a real Ayurveda centre begins with a CONSULTATION a qualified physician (vaidya) takes your history reads your pulse assesses your constitution dosha and PRESCRIBES the treatments oils and diet before any therapy if you walk in and pick a massage off a menu with no physician you are in the spa not the clinic Other markers the therapists work under physician direction the oils are prepared or selected for your constitution not one generic bottle for everyone the centre discusses diet and routine alongside treatment and the genuine places often look more clinical and less candlelit than the luxury spa Is a short treatment worth it yes with honest expectations a few days at a genuine centre with a real consultation a daily prescribed treatment a herbal steam and adjusted diet leaves you genuinely rested and is a real if introductory experience what a few days CANNOT do is the deep work Panchakarma the intensive detoxification and rebalancing is a multi week medically supervised process with prescribed purgation diet and rest done properly it is demanding not a holiday spa week do not let a resort sell you three days of massage as Panchakarma that is the premium theatre you fear What to look for to avoid overpaying ask is there a doctor consultation included ask the therapists qualifications choose centres with a resident physician and a clinical reputation over the prettiest spa menu the established Ayurveda hospitals and the dedicated retreat centres on the southwest coast around Beruwala and Bentota built reputations over decades the genuine article costs less theatre and delivers more substance than the hotel add on at twice the price

A local tip the small town Ayurveda pharmacies and clinics where locals actually go for ailments are the unglamorous real thing ask a local where they get treated not where tourists are sent

Did a genuine week at a Beruwala centre with the daily physician check the diet changes were half the effect and no hotel spa has ever asked what I ate

The do not let them sell three days as Panchakarma warning is gold the word gets slapped on everything and the real thing is a medical commitment not a spa label

The consultation first marker is the whole answer no physician no medicine just a nice massage I will choose the clinical looking place over the candlelit one thank you for the honesty about your own field
