We want to rent a small car to drive ourselves for 10 days. Everyone says we are crazy and should hire a driver. Is the driving really that bad?

It is not "bad", but it operates on a totally different set of rules. Might makes right. Big red buses will overtake on blind corners and force you off the road. Tuk-tuks pull out without looking. Dogs and cows sleep on the tarmac. Hiring a driver takes 100% of that stress away so you can look out the window.

I drove a rental car for 3 weeks and loved the freedom. If you have driven in India, Vietnam, or Naples, you will be totally fine. Just drive defensively and never drive at night.

Okay, the point about the cost difference sold me. We will just hire a driver. Thank you!

The cost difference is minimal. A rental car is about $30 a day. A car WITH a driver is about $45 a day. For $15 extra, let someone else deal with the crazy traffic.
