Renting a scooter in Sri Lanka - is it safe and legal for tourists?
I see many tourists on scooters. Is it legal for foreigners? What about insurance and safety on the roads?

It is legal if you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) endorsed at the AAC in Colombo (or some rental places arrange it). Many places rent without checking, but you're technically riding illegally and insurance may be void if you're in an accident without proper paperwork. Roads are chaotic - many tourists get into minor accidents. If you're experienced with chaotic traffic and defensive riding, it's doable in quieter areas like the south coast or around Sigiriya. In Colombo or Kandy, I wouldn't recommend it.
Will get the IDP endorsed and stick to quieter areas. Thanks for the reality check.
I did it around Sigiriya and it was great for exploring small roads. Felt safer than in busier areas. Always wear a helmet (they provide one, but bring your own if possible).
I rented one in Weligama for a week. It was fun but stressful. One near-miss with a bus was enough to make me more careful. Insurance was basic.
